    From School Library Journal
Grade 3-5 Regardless of the title and the fact that this book purports to be especially for children age 6 and up, these 50 very good recipes are not for beginners. There is much use of the electric mixer and blender, separation of eggs, and folding in of stiffly beaten egg whites. The organization is strange: in addition to breakfast foods and cookies, there are sections such as "Bearing Gifts" and "Holiday Specials," whose contents are a melange of more cookies, cakes, etc., rendering the section headings meaningless. The directions are clear and include safety instructions, and the recipes are varied and imaginative: cream puffs, baked Alaska, graham crackers, soft pretzels, and many more. The sugar content is not excessive, yogurt and other healthy foods are often used, and no packaged mixes are included. Instructive drawings accompany each step of preparation, and there is an index. Reader Reviews
I found this book in our local library and used it to create a cooking project for a group of multi-age children. We tried the Thumbprint Cookies with great success. Using it gave me a great idea for a birthday gift and I've subsequently ordered several copies at Amazon. The classic recipes are well-illustrated, easy-to-read and follow, and yummy. I especially liked the numbered step-by-step directions which are easy for children to read themselves. All the recipes feature multiple illustrations and begin with a list of needed utensils as well as ingredients. The author also covers safety issues involving the oven and stove. After using it for my project I decided to give it, along with a kid-size apron, as a gift for a six-year-old girl. This book offers children and their parents lots of opportunities for fun and learning and will outlast any toy! Comment | Permalink | (Report this)
