Reader Reviews
I saw this book on sale at K-Mart and had to pick it up. I have quite a collection of cookbooks, but I find myself constantly referencing only a few of them...and this has become one of that select few! In fact, I'm going to hunt down and purchase more in the same series. I love the way this book is arranged. There is one recipe per page with a good sized color photo of the finished dish and a few smaller pics of the preparation process. Each recipe lists the nutritional information (calories, protein, carbs, sugars, fat, and saturated fat), the total prep time and cooking time, ingredient list, step by step instructions, and a brief description of the dish underneath its title. There are tons of recipes, and it is REALLY easy to flip through looking at the pics and descriptions and choose something that looks good for dinner. The table of contents lists each dish in the order they appear in the book, dividing chapters into "Soups and Starters," "Appetizers", "Low-Fat Meals," Italian Dishes," "Chinese Dishes," "Pulses (Beans), Grains and Noodles," and "Salads." (Though I find some Indian and Middle Eastern influenced dishes in "Chinese Dishes" chapter. There are also ethnic dishes included in the "Low Fat" chapter.) The index lists each dish by its name alphabetically. It only earned 4 stars because you can't search the index by ingredients (for instance, you can't find everything made with "chicken breasts," or look up "apple" to find "Festive Apple Chicken.") The book is published in England, which accounts for the use of a few terms and ingredients that Americans will find strange. "Pulses" instead of "beans" for instance. And one recipe called for something called "brown fruity sauce," which I had no idea about. But overall, it will be well-understood by Americans and will call for ingredients that are readily available here in regular grocery stores. Overall, it's a very good book. It is very visually appealing and fairly user-friendy. My hardback version did not come with a dust jacket, but the front cover is durable and repels spills. The pages are a thicker paper that makes them easier to quickly flip through and less likely to tear. I highly recommend this book for anyone who is looking for "something different to do with chicken for once."
