    From Publishers Weekly
This manual suggests a raft of Eastern therapeutic techniques for those suffering from anxiety, lack of sleep, poor nutrition, and general unhappiness, all of which Reid traces to "toxic waste" polluting the body, a problem common to the "Western lifestyle." Some of the advice is grounded and practical: the author urges massage, Tai Chi, deep breathing and a sensible diet in a revolving plan of "periodic detox" and "rational retox." Unfortunately, much of this guidebook's program is entirely unsubstantiated. The author is not a doctor, but rather a student of Chinese civilization, and his medical explanation ranges from shaky to irresponsible. For instance, he refers to "toxemia" as a "state of toxicity in the blood and tissues," though medical parlance already defines "toxemia" as a sometimes-fatal pregnancy complication. Specific claims come without any documentation, such as his statement, attributed to "several studies," that "five glasses of pure water per day may reduce risk of colon cancer by 45 percent, breast cancer by 80 percent, and bladder cancer by 50 percent." Most disconcerting are the dubious medical interventions he touts, such as the "Zapper," an electronic parasite-removal device he suggests as a treatment for "asthma, cancer, chronic fatigue syndrome, and candida fungal infections." More reliable sources on detoxification can be found in any self-help section.

    Reader Reviews
This review is from: The Tao of Detox: The Natural Way to Purify Your Body for Health and Longevity (Paperback) I picked this book up after a trip to Bali where I saw one of the author's flyers for a health retreat he was conducting. I'm a bit of a skeptic when it comes to health and wellness gurus even though I pretty much embrace the alternative lifestyle - eat organic, mostly vegetarian, do yoga, chi gung, meditation that kind of thing and I was a little reluctant to buy the book. Let me say I'm glad I did! I quickly went on to buy his other three major books. First up, I let me say, I was simply astounded in how much information was packed into this volume. Page after page is PACKED with advice, explanation, and recommendations on tools, techniques, methods, food and eating guidelines and products. I did a ten day cleanse as recommended by the author. It took some discipline to only do juices for 10 days and use the cleanse kit I bought yet it was well worth the effort. It's a massive understatement to say that I was SHOCKED at the toxic waste that came out of me and I immediately felt 1000% better. I'm not sure I can do justice with words how much better I felt after my first cleanse. Let me say though, I consider the cleanse to have been one of the best things I've done in my entire life and it is now a part of my regular health routine. The book is incredibly comprehensive (there are so many little tips, product recommendations (not for the author's benefit) etc. in there that may be of interest to the reader, including invaluable source lists), well researched and it's quite clear the author is writing from personal experience, it's not just something he's researched or read. Reid knows what he's talking about and has obviously made health and longevity and its study a core part of his life. I can't highly recommend this, and his other books (Tao of Health Sex & Longevity and The Complete Book of Chinese Health & Healing) enough. If you're looking for a comprehensive guide to cleansing, you're not going to do any better than this.
