    Book Description
Out of This Kitchen a History of the Ethnic Groups and Their Foods in the Steel Valley, is an historical cookbook with over 200 ethnic recipes from the Steel Valley, commemorating the centennial of the Homestead Steel Strike of 1892. It is a celebration of the diverse peoples of the Steel Valley, their ethnic heritage and foods. The Steel Valley provided a welcome haven to various Europeans facing political, religious and economic hardships. Each group brought its language, religion and folkways, contributing to the ethnic and cultural diversity that survives today. So, in addition to the recipes, which, because of their historical nature are interesting reading, each section begins with a brief historical reference to place the events of world and national history within the lives of the people and their conditions. Also included are statements from individuals about their family history, and a look back at items of daily household interest, i.e., newspaper ads, helpful household hints, home remedies and photographs, a true picture of the way it was.

    From the Publisher
Out of This Kitchen: a History of the Ethnic Groups and Their Foods in the Steel Valley combines all the right ingredients to make it a top seller nationally. Released in July of 1992 and having sold out in six months, Publassist released a Second Edition in April of 1993. The Second Edition was not a different book, but a second printing of the original with minor revisions. The historical cookbook was originally published to commemorate the centennial of the Homestead Steel Strike of 1892. A celebration of the diverse peoples of the Steel Valley, their ethnic heritage and foods is deliciously "tossed" with 100 years of history, interviews, photographs and 200 recipes. The 186 page best seller tells the story of the European immigration to the Steel Valley. A brief history of each ethnic group is gently blended with household hints, home remedies, and tidbits dating back 100 years. Of all the cultural elements the immigrants brought with them, food is the one most preserved Some of those requesting copies are descendants of these Steel Valley families; those interested in the historical aspect of the cookbook, which we're told reads like a novel; and cookbook collectors who have been extremely excited about Out of This Kitchen.

    Reader Reviews
I was brought up in Southwestern Pennsylvania and I cannot believe how many memories this cookbook brought back. I have used all of my childhood favorite recipes, now I am well on my way to trying new things from different ethnic groups of that area. Also, I can now relate to some of the things that my parents talked about regarding the way that they were brought up. Those little tidbits of information helped me grasp the reasoning behind some of my least favorite recipes as well.------LOVED this book
