From School Library Journal
This book is designed to help teachers and librarians tempt readers "of any age to nibble at a new book." Spencer has gathered, tested, and used more than 200 recipes with children in a library setting (not all are meant to be eaten). She states in her introduction that she feels that cooking enhances youngsters' ability to follow directions while it develops their reading skills and helps them to visualize concepts. The cleverly named foods generally require actual cooking or heating of some kind. Some of the recipes call for the use of a microwave, oven, and/or refrigerator. For this reason, the author suggests some prior preparation and also recommends working with a teacher or another adult. There are no illustrations of the culinary masterpieces. The real beauty of this book is that it encourages adults to be creative and inventive (and, of course, flexible).-Dona J. Helmer, College Gate School Library, Anchorage, AK
