Royal Doulton, founded in 1815, is one of England's famed producers of fine bone china; its designers continue to draw on British history and heritage for inspiration. Although new in 2002, the Baroness pattern is evocative of 19th-century fashions from the heyday of British minor nobility. It uses trellis, fence, and floral motifs in a bold, rich palette of cream, taupe, black and gold. The Royal Doulton 5-piece Baroness dinnerware set includes one 10-1/2-inch dinner plate, one 8-inch salad plate, one 6-1/2-inch bread plate, one 6-inch saucer, and one 8-ounce teacup. The pattern features broad cream borders on glazed white bone china; the borders are decorated with fence and trellis designs in ecru and black. The outermost taupe and black border bands are punctuated with a feathery floral motif reminiscent of a Baroness's tiara ornament. The plates and saucer are detailed with gleaming gold edges, as are the teacup rim and handle. Matching pieces in the Baroness pattern include a rimmed soup bowl, a large and medium platter, and a sumptuous gravy or sauce boat. Because of the gold trim, Baroness dishes should not be used in the microwave. Though not designed to handle extreme temperature changes, Royal Doulton's Baroness china can be pre-warmed for serving in a 100-degree oven. Baroness china is dishwasher safe; it can handle water temperatures of up to 150 degrees F. When hand washing, avoid abrasive cleansers and scourers. When stacking for storage, the best way to avoid scratches is to place a paper napkin between each bowl or plate.
